The Baytown Nature Center’s popular program, the Nurture Nature Series begins a new year on Saturday, January 7 with a fascinating topic – wildlife rehabilitation. The special program is free with regular admission to the Baytown Nature Center, located at 6213 Bayway Drive. This monthly program, designed for the whole family, is presented the first Saturday of each month at 10 am.

Unlike injured domesticated pets that are taken to a veterinarian and brought home to recuperate, injured or sick wild animals require special long-term care. In addition to treatment and/or medication to return to health, they often need special tending to prepare them for a return to the wild. When wild animals interface with humans for a prolonged period of time they may become “imprinted” or dependent on humans for their care. If this occurs, releasing them can be dangerous if they can’t fend for themselves.

Guest speaker Rhonda L. Murgatroyd, a wildlife rehabilitator with Bay Area Wildlife Rehabilitation, will address the requirements and “how-to’s” of rehabbing, as well as share some of her extensive experience with oiled wildlife response teams following oil spills. This event is a must for anyone who participates or would like to participate in wildlife rehabilitation.

Bring the family out for this special monthly program and then stay to walk the facility’s acres of trails, enjoy the Children’s Discovery Area or have a family picnic with a fabulous water view. Mark your calendars for the next topic, Home Gardens on Saturday, February 4, 2012.
